About the Role:

Radar Hire is seeking a high-integrity, detail-obsessed Fire Alarm Designer to support a California-based fire alarm systems integrator serving commercial clients. This is a mission-critical role that requires independent execution of proposal-ready drawings, full submittal packages, and field-coordinated plans that pass AHJ review the first time—every time.

You’ll interface directly with architects, general contractors, inspectors, and plan reviewers, ensuring designs meet the most current code standards. This role demands deep NFPA code knowledge, precision, and a commitment to accuracy, consistency, and compliance.

 

Key Responsibilities

Code-Driven Design Execution

  • Produce proposal-level spot-and-dot drawings within 24–72 hours

  • Deliver permit-ready full submittal packages within 2–14 days

  • Apply NFPA 72, NFPA 70/NEC, CBC, CFC, and 27+ local AHJ amendments with precision

  • Maintain 95%+ first-submittal approval rate

 

Cross-Disciplinary Plan Analysis

  • Review architectural, electrical, mechanical, elevator, and sprinkler plans

  • Identify code issues, determine scope, and prepare bill of materials (BOM)

  • Deliver rapid yet code-compliant proposal support

 

Permit Submittals & QA/QC

  • Use a rigorous pre-submittal checklist to ensure complete, accurate documentation

  • Proactively address potential issues prior to AHJ plan review

  • Deliver revisions in 1–3 days and as-builts within 1–5 days

 

Field Coordination

  • Align designs with real-world installation constraints

  • Collaborate with technicians and trades to ensure practical, compliant installations

  • Protect system integrity without compromising code or design quality

 

Tools & Technology

  • Use your own computer and licensed CAD/design software

  • Follow Redwood City Alarms’ internal design templates and formatting standards

 

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • 3–5+ years of fire alarm system design experience

  • Strong knowledge of NFPA 72, NFPA 70/NEC, CBC, CFC, and multiple AHJ amendments

  • NICET Fire Alarm Systems II or III certification strongly preferred

  • Proven track record of passing submittals with minimal revisions

  • Expert-level proficiency in interpreting construction plans and code documentation

  • Ability to work independently, with minimal oversight, at a high standard of accuracy

  • Excellent written communication, including AHJ responses and client emails

  • Clear, proactive check-ins and consistent virtual communication
